Swing Bed & Ventilation Services

For almost 100 years, Wills Memorial has faithfully served patients and their families – and we want to offer our patient-based, individualized approach to healthcare to you and your family.

That includes our innovative Swing Bed program, which incorporates our state-of-the-art ventilation services, as well as speech, physical, and occupational therapy.

WHAT IS A SWING BED?

A swing bed allows us to offer our attentive brand of care to you or your loved ones if you are in need of consistent care but are also looking to progress toward independence or transitioning to a long-term care facility.

By joining our swing bed program, you are transferred to Wills Memorial, where we put our unique blend of care options to work – treatment paths that are fully focused on addressing your healthcare needs.

Our end goal is to get you back home or to help transition you to a long-term care facility by using a team-based approach, including patient- and family-involved care. Our experienced and close-knit team of doctors, nurses, and therapists tailor care to meet individualized needs to help achieve a maximal level of recovery. And our swing bed coordinator meets weekly with representatives of staff to determine the care path that will produce the best results for each patient.

WHO ARE OUR SWING BED PATIENTS?

We offer our services to individuals of all ages. Swing bed patients are under care for a variety of reasons and are not ready to return home – or to a long-care treatment facility. So, if you or a loved one are recovering from or are dealing with:

  • Respiratory conditions – including complications from COVID-19
  • Cardiac conditions/recovery
  • Joint replacement, orthopedic injury/surgery
  • Stroke or Neuromuscular disorders
  • Trauma related injury
  • Persistent infection or disease treatment that requires IV antibiotics
  • Difficult wound healing that requires attentive medical care

Wills Memorial’s swing bed program is ready and available to help you continue the healing process. We offer fully private rooms to each and every swing bed patient – as well as an Inpatient Pharmacy and Inpatient and Outpatient Therapy gyms. In addition, our on-campus reflection garden provides patients and their families with much-needed respite and fresh air. And we encourage and support full family involvement in all of our care.

Above all, we commit all our resources to the patient, providing unparalleled one-on-one, multidisciplinary care.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

When you or your loved one joins our swing bed program, our swing bed coordinator and attentive staff will meet with you to determine the optimal care path.

Your length of stay will be determined by your individual needs. Our average swing bed patient stays with us for 10 days, but you may only need us for a few days. And if you need our help for longer, we will be here for you. Whatever it takes, we will help you progress in healing.

In order to meet our patients’ needs, Wills Memorial quadrupled its staff and acquired a multitude of industry-leading healthcare instruments – purchased with dollars from the Georgia HEART Tax Credit program. This allows us to successfully receive and care for patients locally and from across the nation. And that includes our cutting-edge ventilation therapy, as well as speech, physical, or occupational therapy.

WHAT IS SPECIALIZED PULMONARY REHABILITATION?

At Wills Memorial, we offer a fully-staffed team of ACLS certified Respiratory Therapists from all backgrounds (home care, trauma centers, and rehab facilities). Our staff has expertise in ventilator weaning techniques and in managing medically complex patients requiring ventilators.

In addition, our state-of-the-art ventilators and high flow equipment help ensure the best outcomes.

We also understand the anxiety often associated with long-term ventilator/tracheostomy reliance, so we offer licensed clinical social workers, as well as unique approaches such as pet therapy to help break the cycle of worry and fear. If, after 100 days, we are unable to progress the patient from a ventilator/ tracheostomy, we help transfer the patient to a long-term care facility for continued support.

This approach has been successful for a wide range of patients, including those suffering from COVID complications.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER SWING BED AND/OR VENTILATION THERAPY?

Most private insurance companies cover swing bed services. Meanwhile, government funded insurances will often consider coverage based on prior authorization. A Wills Memorial Swing Bed Coordinator will verify your benefits and help you understand your personal coverage.

WHAT MAKES WILLS’ APPROACH UNIQUE?

Our ability to provide one-on-one care with a committed team of professionals – all of whom work in concert to pursue best outcomes for the patients – allows us to take the case load off other healthcare professionals and get patients back on their feet.

We also have close relationships with larger area hospitals, including Augusta University Hospital, that allows our patients full access to acute services, should they be required.

Wills Memorial is Joint Commission Accredited and is ready to help in whatever manner we can.
